Valencia Cafe Restaurant

Not strictly a caff, but offering a cafe concession much like a department store. I ordered beans to keep my egg and chips company, and it looks like Valencia literally ordered the beans on to my plate. And the beans obeyed! You can see the route they took - dish edge in. If I close my eyes, I can almost picture a kitchen full of obedient, breakfast elements eagerly awaiting their turn.

Have you ever seen such an abnormous plate?

Closed unfortunately [it is Sunday] but the hi-viz stars still shine brightly. Another caff noted whilst on a capital visit. Records show that the Brunswick area is quite well served when it comes to greaseries. I counted three on my short walk from lodgings to destination. That's breakfast, dinner and tea covered!

I clocked this caff before I went to watch a screening of some Eastern European animation. The sign said it closed at 2:00pm, but when I returned at 1:45 for an express oil-up - or should I say - oil-out all the chairs were upended like an extinct canteen.

Beano Cafe

Well the photograph looks like this was a drive-by, but fortunately nobody got hurt. Many thanks to my sister Becca for this one she spotted on the way back from the ferry. In her words: 'Know nothing about it but looks like it is a favourite of taxi drivers.'

Well, further proof of Beano Cafe's eligibility and further proof of the feminine ability to multitask - navigating a naval exit whilst making a record of caffs for her brother's profitless cause. Hooray!

The Grindleford Cafe

This was the second attempt taken to arrive at this eatery. On the first, my friend James' 200k Saab [that's mileage, not value] decided to blow its own head gasket on the way over. Leaving us stranded and subject to much sign language in the middle of the road. 6 months later and in another, not so new Saab we set out in convoy again and arrived at the Grindleford.

My word they serve hefty portions! The featured photo is a meativore's platter and due to its size, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're looking at it through a telescope. Macca 15" plates brimming with fried fare as standard.

Now this servicing isn't without some conditions. The Grindleford exhibits a sign for every eventuality, and they exist to keep customers in their own place - the near side of the counter. The smooth running of a caff like this should be left to the experts, and any interfiddlery will just end in tears. We witnessed a hiker disobey this agreement and question his 'hash browns, eggs and beans' when he received an egg single [despite the fact it clearly says eggs plural on the board]. He made the mistake of daring to suggest that the board be changed and nearly ended up having his meal join him inside his tight, black leggings.

Know your place and all will be well done!

Drove here in convoy after Andy and Anja's engagement party - and credit goes to Andy for leading us here. We all had fuzzy heads [hence blurry photo] and a good deal of wig rash. Top fried fare and a grand tonic to all the Speckled Hen that was had the night before.

Don't be fooled that the server has taken a fancy to you - it's free hot-drink refills as standard!

Billie's

A hot pile of fried potato, sausage, egg, black pudding, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms and cheese are the mainstay of Billie's famous 'Farmhouse' hash. It costs about £5 and you really ought to go for a 10 mile run after eating it. Despite the cost to your pocket and health, it's a fantastic experience which can finished off by a pint in the pub next door and a creme egg on the way home.

Billie's does other hashes - such as the Ranchero for TexMex vegetarians, but it's the Farmhouse that makes this cafe's reputation. You can also get a very fine Full English for the same price. So, a bit expensive, but the ingredients are all high quality and the service is nice and friendly. Avoid Sunday mornings unless you like queuing.

Here, not only did we enjoy a stack of fun-fried fare, but we also witnessed no less than seven executions of a turn-in-the-road by locals whilst eating it.

Rose Cafe

I walked all the way across the other side of town for this one. I'd spied it on occasions before and made a mental note to be back here sometime soon.

As I approached, I grew a little worried. I had remembered the cafe being emblazoned with 'All Day Breakfast' declarations like the end of the War, however I was inquiet as to whether it was just another sandwich shop. I could always go inside, order a take-away tea and then run for the hills...

But thankfully, I did go inside! All the signs I was looking for were there: fixed seating, perspex wall mounted menus and red and brown sauces with a decanter bevel. I made my order at the counter where I was addressed as Boss and asked to take a seat.

My tea and meal took no time at all, but it looked like there could be a problem [see picture]. Rose Cafe had got so carried away with piling my plate full of chips and beans, that there might be no room for the double-egg. Not to worry - they just flapped them on top like a pair of smiley eyes. Ha ha! Did one of them just wink at me?

The best way to discover Sergio's [rather than following the directions] is to wander London as a down-and-out, trip over and have Sergio's staring you back in the face like a lost five-pound note.

Jorvik Cafe

I'm confused, but not as confused as the Jorvik Cafe. They've the menu of a caff, super strong, dark splosh you could clean a coin in and a classic open-the-flap-yourself counter. However this is all trapped in a carpeted, 'terra Costa' surround. They've even got WiFi of all the scandalous things.

From the menu, the food sounds tops yet prices are steep. But this is York - a tourist capital - and the Jorvik Cafe is in a prime location. It's as close to the town's yolk as a council would normally let a caff. Which might explain its paninis and wraps, list of more than one coffee and 'latte lounge' area to sit with your shopping from Poundland.

Staff are very friendly and on my way out I spied one of those machines which keeps squash cold all day, like a mini water treatment plant, stirring the E numbers round and round.

Borderline, but still on our side of the fence. Best to keep on good terms with in case a war breaks out with the tea-rooms.

Another one that my stomach made a note to come back to, Hungry Horace's in York. Unfortunately I was greeted by a chair wodged in the door and a 'closed' sign. So I left, but not before I'd pressed my face up against the window like a Dickensian pleb eyeing those who'd just made it's plates brimmed full of tuck. I reckon my greasy nose-print will still be there when I come back next week. I'll make another note to wipe it off.

Also known as 'Dunny's' - but not to be confused with the Australian.

The last time I came in here the kid next to me sicked up a stomach-load of blackcurrant kia-ora all over our table. The lady serving then came over and asked 'have you finished with that' pointing to my plate. I was in two minds... but not for long. Dunny's is cheaper than Thailand, so I ordered a second round as replacement.

With my tucker delivered and the table fixed, who should walk in but the knighted fixer himself - Sir Jimmy Saville! In full shell-suited livery.

Please don't be put off by my experience, I cannot recommend Dunny's more highly. The vomit, I can assure you was a one-off. Lighting never strikes twice as they say - apart from Sir Jimmy Saville that is, who is a regular patron.

Quality, good-priced fare and pint-sized cupsa splosh as standard. How's about that then!

We love Mama Zippy - her numerical menu makes ordering as easy as a big-button phone. Zippy highlights include 'Brown Derby' [pictured], deep-fried flapjacks and 20p convenience levy for non-customers. If it's 20p, I'm definitely washing my hands - well, you've got to get your money's worth.
